Bibliometric analysis of research hotspots and trends on Parkinson's disease with excessive daytime sleepiness based on Web of Science database

Abstract

Objective To conduct a bibliometric and visualization analysis of the relevant literature on Parkinson's disease with excessive daytime sleepiness to reveal the research hotspots and development trends in this field.

Methods The relevant literature on Parkinson's disease with excessive daytime sleepiness published in Web of Science Core Collection database was retrieved from its establishment to September 21, 2025. The CiteSpace 6.1.6R software was used to conduct a visual analysis of the number of publications, authors, institutions, countries/regions, keywords, and cited literature.

Results A total of 746 articles were included. The number of publications was the highest in 2022 (n=53), and the number of publications has shown a downward trend since then. Chaudhuri KR had the highest number of publications (n=16) and citation frequency (n=299), and King's Coll London had the highest number of publications (n=27). The United States had the highest number of publications (n=176). The results of keyword co-occurrence and literature co-citation analysis showed that dopamine receptor agonists, depression, deep brain stimulation, quality of life, and disease mechanism are the current research hotspots.

Conclusion Parkinson's disease with excessive daytime sleepiness is closely related to the adverse reactions of dopamine receptor agonists. The pathogenesis, depression, and dopamine receptor agonists may be the research hotspots in the future. Future research should focus on the epidemiological characteristics of psychotropic drugs in Parkinson's disease patients and their association with excessive daytime sleepiness, in order to provide a basis for safe clinical medication.
