Objective To investigate the current status of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) self-management education and support, so as to provide a reference for improving the self-management ability of diabetic patients and formulating targeted management strategies.
Methods A qualitative interview method was adopted in this study. From April 1 to 30, 2025, in-depth individual interviews were conducted with inpatients with T2DM at Yiwu Campus of Dongyang People's Hospital, while group interviews were carried out with clinical medical staff and primary chronic disease management personnel in the subordinate medical community. The interview outline was designed around the current status and cognition of T2DM management, as well as the demand and supply status of patient self-management education and support. The interview texts were analyzed and themes were extracted using NVivo 14.0 software and the data were statistically analyzed using Microsoft Excel 2019 software.
Results A total of 10 patients were interviewed, and 2 main themes and 5 sub-themes were extracted: good self-management cognition but non-standard management (good self-management cognition, non-standard self-management) and multiple shortcomings in health education and support (connection gap between patient demand and medical support, insufficient health education, insufficient system support).
Conclusion The self-management ability of diabetic patients and the corresponding support system need to be further strengthened. Medical workers should carry out personalized and diversified professional health education based on the characteristics of their respective positions.
