Abstract

Objective  To investigate the clinical communication ability of residents and explore the differences among students in different grades, identities and whether or not in surgical departments, so as to provide references for the training of residents' clinical communication ability.

Methods  Using a six dimensional scale invented by Steyn focusing on establishing rapport and respect, listening receptively, confirming the problems of patient, sharing control, informing effectively, checking perceptions to investigate and compare clinical communication ability of residents in different grades, identities and whether or not in surgical departments.

Results  The median of the total clinical communication score for residents was 91.5 (83, 99). There is no significant difference in clinical communication between students in different grades and surgical and non-surgical departments. The clinical communication ability of students with different identities was different, and the clinical communication ability of residents in units and industries was higher than that of the master's degree students (P=0.012; P=0.045).

Conclusion There are differences in clinical communication ability of residents with different identities. The clinical communication ability of residents in units and industries are higher than that of professional master students. In the cultivational process of clinical communication ability during the standardized residential training, it is necessary to pay attention to the training mentality and thoughts of students with different identities, to stress the sense of responsibility, to help students improve their mentality, set up the goal and strengthen the training.
