Objective  To explore the retraction status and main reasons for Chinese articles in the field of nursing published in international journals between 2014 and 2024.

Methods  Based on the Retraction Watch database, Chinese articles retracted by international journals in the nursing field from January 1, 2014 to December 31, 2024 were retrieved. Statistical analysis was conducted on the publication date, the retraction date, affiliated journals, publishing units, authors' regions, and reasons for retraction.

Results  A total of 239 retracted articles were included in the study, with a small number of retractions from 2014 to 2020 (an average of <5 retractions per year), a surge of retractions from 2021 to 2022, and a low level of retraction volume from 2023 to 2024. The retraction was highly concentrated in Hindawi Publishing House (220 articles), and its interdisciplinary journals such as Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine had a large number of retractions. The hotspot provinces for retractions were Shandong (40 articles), Jiangsu (34 articles), Hubei (26 articles), Zhejiang (20 articles), Hunan (17 articles), etc. The main reasons for retractions were misconduct (52.68%), data errors (28.39%), and ethical violations (11.21%).

Conclusion  In the past decade, especially in 2021-2022, the number of retractions of Chinese nursing articles in international journals has surged, and scientific integrity is facing severe challenges. The reasons for retractions involve data reliability, ethical norms, publishing loopholes, and scientific research pressure. Comprehensive measures should be taken from the dimensions of strengthening special integrity education, constructing a regulatory support mechanism, improving the evaluation system, and promoting international cooperation and information sharing to build a scientific integrity prevention and control system that is in line with the characteristics of the nursing discipline.
