Abstract

Objective To analyze the research hotspots and development trends in the field of sports injury prevention and treatment over the past 10 years so as to provide references for relevant studies in China.

Methods Literature related to sports injury prevention and treatment published from August 16, 2016 to August 16, 2025 was retrieved from the Science Citation Index Expanded, Social Science Citation Index, and Conference Proceedings Citation Index-Science in the Web of Science (WoS) Core Collection database. The retrieved data were imported into CiteSpace 6.2.R4 for visual analysis of publishing countries, authors, institutions, and co-citation relationships. Subsequently, the dataset was imported into HistCite Pro 2.1 for citation analysis, to locate high-impact papers, identify academic collaborators and explore emerging research areas.

Results A total of 1382 eligible publications were included, and the annual publication volume showed a steady upward trend. Cooperation among different research teams was relatively sparse, and a large-scale close collaboration pattern had not yet been formed. Research institutions were geographically dispersed, with limited inter-institutional cooperation. The United States ranked first in the number of publications (492 articles), followed by China at the fourth position (140 articles). British Journal of Sports Medicine had the highest total citation frequency, while Journal of Orthopaedic Research presented the highest average citation per paper. Keyword clustering and burst detection analysis revealed the evolution of research hotspots in this field over the past 10 years. Keyword co-occurrence results indicated that injury, prevention, risk factors, children, and anterior cruciate ligament injury constituted the core research directions.

Conclusion International research on sports injury prevention and treatment is currently in a period of paradigm deepening, but the global collaboration network still needs further optimization. Research in this field in China not only needs to accelerate progress to catch up with the mainstream frontiers, but also has a window of opportunity to achieve breakthroughs in specific directions based on local practical experience.
