Objective  To explore and summarize the research achievements and current status in the field of prescription review in China on the perspective of bibliometrics, in order to provide reference for the future development of this field.

Methods  Relevant literature in the field of prescription review in China was obtained by searching databases including CNKI, WanFang Data, and VIP. The trends of publication, cooperation between authors and institutions, and keywords in this field were analyzed by using Microsoft Office Excel 2017, VOSviewer 1.6.20, and CiteSpace 6.3.R2 softwares. The research achievements in this field were presented and the research hotspots were analyzed.

Results  A total of 695 articles were included, and the research development in this field could be roughly divided into three periods. The authors mainly cooperated within institutions. The high-impact article analysis indicated that the practical application of prescription pre-approval and prescription review was the key research content. Nine meaningful clusters were obtained by keyword clustering analysis; the results of keyword emergence analysis showed that the current research focused on Chinese patent medicines, outpatient and emergency departments, and inpatients.

Conclusion  In recent years, the research and development in the field of prescription review in China has slowed down compared to earlier periods. It is necessary to strengthen cooperation and communication among different institutions and authors to expand the depth of the research, in order to further explore the research hotspots in this field, and improve the research core.
