Abstract

Objective  To systematically integrate the qualitative studies of body image experience in enterostomy patients, and to provide evidence-based evidence for exploring comprehensive support strategies and individualized intervention programs for enterostomy patients.

Methods  PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, the Cochrane Library, ProQuest, CINAHL (EBSCO), Scopus, CNKI, WanFang Data, VIP, CBM were searched for qualitative studies on the body image experience of enterostomy patients from the establishment of the databases to April 8, 2024. The methodological quality of the included studies was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) Critical Appraisal Checklist for Qualitative Research. The aggregation integration method was used for data integration.

Results  A total of 17 articles were included, 59 topics were extracted and summarized into 9 new categories, and 4 integrated results were formed: multidimensional perceptions arising from changes in body image, negative experience of body image changes, active exploration and self-adjustment of body image changes, and the desire for support and self-growth.

Conclusion  Enterostomy patients had body image disorder in many aspects. Medical staff should pay attention to the body image of enterostomy patients, provide necessary health education and support together with family and society, improve the level of positive response, and promote the physical and mental recovery of patients.
